About The Society

The King's Lynn & District Society of Model Engineers was formed in 1970, to bring together all those in the area interested in Model Engineering.

Like many Societies, a large portion of our membership is interested in miniature railways, and one of the Club's earliest aims was to build a track to run the models on. The first track was situated in the Walks at King's Lynn, although redevelopment of the area meant we were moved to Lynnsport in 1992 as a ground level track, and over the last couple of years work has concentrated on improving our facilities at this new site.

Charity

The Club helps to support charity; a fixed percentage of our ticket revenue from the Railway is donated each year: this year's charity is the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind.

In 2007 we supported the British Heart Foundation and in 2006 we helped Diabetes UK.

When the portable track attends a charity fund raising event, a percentage of the takings goes to the fund the event is in aid of.

Members Interests

We don't just cater for model railways - model engineering encompasses all kinds of interests. Have a look at the links below to see what else we get up to:

What do you get as a member?

boiler testing

As you will see from the Container Project page, the Society is fitting out the Cabin with a basic workshop, featuring a small number of machine tools. With these and with the advice of fellow club members available, this should be ideal for new starters to model engineering to enable them to work through their projects.

For members with steam boilers in their models, boiler testing is available* from the Club and this certification is needed if you want to run your models in the presence of the general public.

*(conditions apply, please ask for details)

The Club holds a library of Model Engineer magazines which are available for loan - if you're missing an edition with an important article in, have a look to see if we have it amongst our collection.

Our Monthly meetings are held at Lynnsport on the second Tuesday of each month, upstairs in the Wembley Room. During the summer months, we make the most of the weather and hold the meetings down at the Track, usually Fun Runs and Barbeque evenings where the trains get taken for a spin. During the rest of the year, we meet indoors with varying themes to the meetings. The Bits and Pieces nights are a simple yet interesting idea; members are invited to bring along their current project, or parts of, in whatever state of completion for an informal discussion with other members. This can be very interesting as we get a taste for what range of subjects our members are interested in, and these sessions can be educational, often for both the builder and those listening. It may be that the builder has a problem with a certain aspect of the model and the advice of fellow members can help resolve the issue, or vice versa. See the News and Events page for details of up and coming meetings and any guest speakers.

Puff n Stuff

Members receive our quarterly newsletter 'Puff n Stuff' which is due out in February, May, August and November, featuring a round up of all the recent news from the Society. The Editor welcomes input from all members and free adverts and "for sale" notices can be submitted. Members wishing to have adverts and for sale notices placed in the newsletter, please send it as early as possible, preferably at least two weeks before the magazine is due out.

Down at the Railway, members are covered by the club insurance to operate their models at club running sessions. A competency test must be taken if the member wishes to drive the fare paying public and their loco/driving trolley must meet set standards. However, if a member wishes to drive trains, public or otherwise, and doesn't have their own loco - there is always the club's own 5" gauge Class 08 shunter available for use. Our regular railway crew are a friendly bunch and driving each others trains makes for an interesting afternoon.
